''It Gets Better'' video released by San Francisco Giants – MLB News
The reigning World Series Champions, the San Francisco Giants recently posted their It Gets Better video on a popular video website where team members talk about their campaign against g*y bullying and homophobia. The Giants are the first Major League team
to do so.
The video came into being after a dedicated Giants’ fan Sean Chapin kicked of an online petition urging the team to get on board with the idea. The Giants already had the idea to make the video but Chapin’s movement definitely sped up the production.
The five players from San Francisco who appear in the video are pitchers Matt Cain, Barry Zito and Sergio Romo along with Andres Torres the center-fielder and batting coach Hensley Meulens. The absence of Tim Lincecum and Aubrey Huff, who are the most famous
out of the Giants’ club-house was definitely felt. The video goes on for 58 seconds and is set against a ball park where the players are dressed up in their uniforms.
Zito and Romo begin by saying, ''We all know how difficult life can be as a teenager, we’ve all been there and had to deal with the pressure to fit in and be accepted by our peers.'' Cain continues on to say, ''It's particularly challenging for LGBT teens
that face adversity and intolerance in their daily lives.''
Following the Giants’ footsteps are the Chicago Cubs who announced that they will become the second Major League team to participate for the cause and produce an It Gets Better video, which like the one from the Giants will take a stand against homophobia
and g*y bullying.
The Cubs released a statement where the lauded the Giants for their effort and how they inspired others to join the much needed cause. Laura Ricketts, the Cubs’ owner and board member said they were proud to stand with the Giants for this cause.
Work on the project has been undergoing since almost a week and team members will be filming for the video after the Cubs return to Wrigley Field after the 10 game road-trip that just begun.
The Boston Red Sox, have decided to make one too after like the Giants’ fan, a Red Sox fan, 12-year old Sam Maden started a petition asking his home team to make a video. He asked the Red Sox to make a video in honour of his uncle and his heart felt petition
was signed on by 10,000 people before Boston agreed.
Currently there are two other petitions for the Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees to make videos like these which will generate a wave of awareness among the throng of fans that each team has.
