Question:

'95 Yamaha Wave Venture (WaveRunner) bogs down over about 5mph?

I have a WaveVenture that my friend gave me and I know nothing about it. I got it running today, runs and idles perfectly, except over 5mph. If you try and give it a little more gas, it bogs down and if your quick you can save it from stalling. I know theres nothing in the impeller. When you pour some gas on the carb, it runs like mad. It's obviously just not getting fuel. I just changed the fuel filter, and also the primer/choke. Does anyone hve any suggestions??

Thanks!!

  1. Very most likely your friend neglected his PWC and let fuel sit idle in the carb for many months or even a year or more.  I would also bet there are certain hidden maintenance issues with your person watercraft as well that you do not know about.

Since you have little or no clue on the maintenance your friend has done on the PWC you got.  So you need to take your PWC to a reliable PWC repair shop and have them check the carb on it.  Then also have them do a complete inspection of it and have them pull the water pump to see if the impeller needs replacing (VERY important).

While you are having it serviced or right after its serviced, you need to ask a LOT of questions on what you should know, what things to avoid, what things to regular inspect for, and other details.  You are paying them $65 to $85 an hour to work on it, so get your money's worth and get yourself fully informed on it.

  2. Remove carb(s), disassemble, soak overnight in carb cleaner, blow out all passages with compressed air (or aerosol carb cleaner), reassemble with new carb kit(s), reinstall, link & sync, adjust mixture s***w(s) (if equipped).

*Don't* run it like it is - any cylinders starving for fuel are also not getting lubrication.

  3. Sounds to me like a reed valve may be cracked. Bought a 1998 Tigershark a year ago, run great on shore...when it had a load on it in the water about 5 mph and thats all she would do without boggin'. If you feel comfortable with doing it yourself pull the carb assembly off, then remove the intake. The reed valves set just below the intake in the block. Remove them and inspect for any signs of cracks or wear. If so replace and give it a shot. Recommend Boysden Power Reeds for pwcs.
