i have a '97 ford taurus that just pulled a troubleshooting code reading P0430. how serious is this code? what happens if i leave it alone for a while.

I also looked under the car where the catalytic convertor is and the buttom shield has somehow disappeared (fallen off) however the top shield is still intact. Is that serious?

Please Help!

  1. the 0430 means the catalyst is below threshold. The cat may be damaged since the shield is off.

  2. its your Catalytic converter code get it checked (code book check)

  3. P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2). The PCM compares the readings from the rear Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) and front HO2S and determines how well the catalytic converter is working. If the readings get close enough to each other, the PCM sets DTC P0430.

If this is the only code pulled, then it would tend to indicate a catalytic converter starting to go bad. Crossed or damaged HO2S wiring would set a DTC P0430 as well. If the fuel pressure is within specifications and there are no vacuum leaks and the exhaust system is in good shape, then the chances of a bad catalytic converter are good.
