  2. It's made with saffron.

  3. "Golden Rice" is the outcome of inserting the gene sequence that is responsible for the production of vitamin A into the rice germ-line.

Vitamin A is a simple hydrocarbon molecule; it is slightly yellow in low concentration and is what is responsible for the color of carrots and sweet potatoes; it is also present in green vegetables.  A protein or series of proteins is responsible for the production of Vitamin A (also known as B-carotene).  In turn, the responsible proteins are synthesized by the organism using the gene(s) that code for the needed proteins.

So the molecular biologist prepares the gene sequence that codes for these proteins, purifies it, and then inserts it into rice's native gene sequence.  This is done using similar techniques that a virus uses to inject its genes into the host cell during an infection.

If successful, the new organism, "golden rice" , will produce vitamin A and all of it's seed offspring will also do so.
