'Gypsy' surnames in 1800s?

Research for a book. What would a 'gypsy'/Romani surname have been in the late 1800s - a family living in the 'caravan' lifestyle? Would it have been an English surname in order to blend, or a Romani name?

I've read that it is common for them to have a double nomenclature, a 'public' and a 'private' surname. Would this apply here?

  1. The Rom stretched from the Middle East all the way through Europe and over to the US. Are you looking for a character name from a particular part of Europe or an Anglicized name?

Karoli, Cioaba, are very common names. But it depends on whether you're looking look at a band from Serbia, Hungary, Russia or Scandinavia. Even the name Reinhardt is tied to German gypsies.
