I'm a newbie at this. Basically, I will soon buy a new HDTV, and want to be sure the best video & sound connections. I'll only be connecting a DVD player and cable box, but want to enjoy the sound through my Onkyo stereo receiver.

My confusion relates to connecting to the receiver. I plan to run an optical wire from TV to stereo receiver for tv sound.

And if i run video & audio connectivity into the tv from both DVD & cable box - is that enough? Will the optical cable from TV to stereo give me the sound for all 3 components? Or do i need to run a separate audio connection to the stereo AND tv for both the cable box and dvd player?

NOTE - assume that i won't be connecting with HDMI connections

  1. You'll need to run a toslink/optical from your dvd player and cable box to the receiver.  You shouldn't run an optical from your tv to your receiver.

As far as video goes, you can run it either through the receiver from both the dvd player and cable box and run a single video signal (component if no HDMI) from the receiver to the tv.  Or your second choice would be to run video signals from your dvd player and cable box directly to the tv.

  2. seperate connections for seperate components dont try to ty everything together. run the tv to the reciever, run the cable throught reciever and run the dvd player through the reciever. your reciever is made to handle these functions use them.

if your not doing hdmi, then try dvi or components if available. your optical connections are also good options to use.

  3. You should run separate audio connections for both your cable box and DVD player, you should not run an audio signal from your TV to the receiver though.
