We've conducted a survey that shockingly reveals that nearly one in four men in the UK would pick their football team over their wife or girlfriend if push came to shove.
The poll of 3,000 sports fans reveals that 22% of men would dump their girlfriend before sacrificing their beloved football team; a cautionary tale for partners everywhere who moan about their man's commitment to their club.
According to the survey, women in Liverpool have the most to worry about, with 31% of fans in Merseyside opting for their football team ahead of their partner. Football loyalty in Liverpool clearly runs particularly deep, with fans sticking by local teams Liverpool FC and Everton despite their disappointing starts to the 2010/11 season.
As sports fans ourselves we understand the levels of devotion and loyalty of fans to their teams, but even we were surprised to see that almost a quarter of men would pick their club over their partner. It's not a particularly romantic finding, especially with Valentine's Day coming up next month.
Other cities with especially loyal football fans are London, where 30% would also opt for their team before their partner, and Leicester (28%), Manchester (26%) and Birmingham (24%).
In contrast, only 7% of respondents from Coventry would choose their team ahead of their wife or girlfriend.
My advice to women in the UK, especially in Liverpool, would be to think twice before asking their partner to do something at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon!
