Question:

'Martial Arts' as my Physics coursework?

So I've got physics coursework coming up

I asked the teacher and she said it'd be fine if I do a topic on martial arts, as long as it's relevant

so can anyone come up with any possibilites?

(eg. Should Martial Arts.......?)

  1. you could do it on the principle of moments, etc... there is good experiments involving building a human arm out of levers, springs and bands and calculating the forces thats balance. this could be used to look at how a person uses someones weight and momentum against them to throw themin martial arts... it would however be quiet an intensive study! see what your teacher thinks!

  2. Plenty of info on here and Google.

Good luck and best wishes :)***

  3. i dont know about phrasing it as "should martial arts...", but there is definately a lot of physics involved.

force is everything, you can do a person falling (their mass times gravity), how forceful a punch is depends on the acceleration, etc.

momentum plays a huge role in punches and kicks, where by adding a twist you increase momentum making the punch or kick harder.

torque can explain why it is easier to throw a taller person (make them fall to the ground), seeing as you can increase the lever arm.

you can pick most mechanical physics topics and relate them to martial arts, good choice!

for the actual topic, try sticking with Newtons Laws to keep it simple

-a punch in motion stays in motion

-force of a punch is dependant on some mass times the acceleration of the punch

-punching a person has an opposite and equal reaction on your elbow

etc. be creative, your teacher will love it

  4. Look at the aspects of "leverage", "momentum", "force", "speed", "action and reaction" and "contact" as well as "movement" and I think you'll be fine!!!

  5. Try the link in the reference below. It will give you some Ideas.

I think this is a great topic and I have used the laws of physics to explain to my students why some of the seemingly incredible things in martial arts really work and of course why some movie stuff is just impossible. If you want to use the laws you can't break them.;)
