'Merge in turn' (driving question)?

Can anyone tell me what 'merge in turn' means, it's something to do with changing lanes and overtaking but i'm not sure what...?

  1. Nothing to do with overtaking or making a turn.

    Im in UK so applies here as such. Not sure on other countries

    'merge in turn' is used when a dual carriage way narrows into one lane so the traffice is forced into single file.

    The fairest and safest way to do this is take turns when mergeing into one lane.

    IE one car from the right lane then from the left, then the right and so on.

    So if you were driving on the dual carriage way in the left hand lane and you see merge in turn you would let the car on your right in front of you (then you ofcourse) The car behind you would then do the same. This allows both lanes to merge into the new single road at the same rate and stops backflow of traffic.
