  1. Everybody did it.

Automakers and dealers killed electric cars because they are long-lived and very low maintenance, meaning dealers make less off of repairs and sell fewer because they last longer, and automakers make and sell fewer new vehicles and replacement parts.  Also, due to economies of scale, automakers can produce gas engines far cheaper than electric ones.

Oil companies killed electric cars because the cars would greatly reduce the need for their product.

Politicians killed electric cars because they're beholden to auto makers, auto dealers and oil companies.

Consumers killed electric cars because we place a higher value on style and horsepower than on fuel economy.  Price and range were also issues.

So...once the car companies can make a cheap, high-powered yet not terribly durable or reliable electric car that somehow still relies on oil for its use, they'll sell.  But maybe they'll use a little less oil and pollute less, so that'd still be something.

  2. It is a bunch of Bull****. The electric car killed itself. Most People do not want them, or they would be everywhere. It has nothing to do with car companies.

Electric cars suck. They are expensive, heavy, short ranged, and just move pollution from one place to another.

  3. http://www.whokilledtheelectriccar.com

the technology was there, the customers wanted it. the only thing lacking was commitment from the car makers and CARB to stand up to the pressure from US government (sponsored by big oil)

  4. I look at these comments. and it looks like no one will EVER be satisfied with EV's the higher range they make these cars get, the higher range people want. A good EV today gets around 200 mpc and goes almost 100 mph.

Considering that nearly NO one drives over 100mph and doesn't travel 200 miles in a day. i think that suffices

  5. They were killed because they are not practical. They get 40 miles on a full charge, are evxpensive to buy, and if the battery goes bad you have a major expense. If the wacko environmentalist really cared about the environment they would sell an electric car at prices competitive with a gas powered car which gets at least 350 miles per charge. This is a free country and no one is stopping you. If you sell one you can be assured of being wealthy forever. The problem is it can't currently be done. I really wish someone would sell a car describe above. Forcing auto companies to sell products at a loss is nonsense. Toyota I know was selling Prius's at a loss buy this was to gain a marketing edge. It seems to have worked. But forcing Toyota to sell a Prius would have been stupid and would not have produced the desired results.

  6. Everybody! No one wanted to buy it, sell it, or drive it. Sounds great on paper, but when you a sticker more than a $100k, when the same gas model is sold for $20k, it's going to be a hard sale.

  7. I provided a link to Wikipedia and IMDB.

No one "killed" it, the car companies simply refused to make them anymore. Although there are companys that are making electric cars these days, link below.

  8. it shows how many different things from the oil companies to Detroit auto makers decisions do go with the high profit low fuel economy suv's like the hummer over more costly electric concepts as well as consumer interest at the time killed the american electric car and how now the forien companies have the advantage thanks to the devolpment time they have on cars like the toyota prius. so Detroit Auto makers, american oil companies and the american public killed the electric car
