Question:

'Women take jobs that usually pay less than men's' - Agree/disagree?

'The pay disparity mainly exists because women tend to dominate the jobs that pay less.

Also women are much, much less likely to take up dangerous jobs that risk life and limb, so the sheer danger involved make these jobs pay more, and since men take these more, you shouldn't be surprised that men earn more.

Women earn on an average 23% less than the average man's salary. But that's the problem with averages, they hide the real disparitites and the causes. When you do some introspection, you find there isn't much for women to complain about regarding this. '

These are excerpts of an excellent answer taken from answersgeek (hope you don't mind if I make further use of it).

  1. It just seems apparent-and so pain-producing- to me that there IS no matter of "agreeing, or not" here -->as with all things, there IS what the numbers actually are, and its wrong for anyone to incite beleifs either way if you didnt bring them with you!

As for what produces debate? That's easy. A buffoon says a lie (for his motives). and so someone corrects his 'error', but he responds with"Well we all have the right to our opinion!""THat's American!"(so "ARENT YOU?!@!!) and presto, you've got a room full of Jerry Springer mentalitied

spectators who'll go off parrotting what htey were exposed to. VOILA! A "debate" is created.

It's standard trick number one, for the party that had to work to take over.

There were some pretty nefatious leaders, in history, who famously used this technique too.

  2. Yes, I agree. Beyond that, men tend to ask for higher salaries and more raises/promotions than women.

  3. I agree. Most men don't want to be a childcare worker or secretary. Also, even a lot of professional women take several years off of their career for childrearing, thus putting them behind their male contemporaries. And many women also take lower-paying jobs because they provide more flexibility for child-related issues. (Example: where I work, the pay is very low, but the owners are also EXTREMELY understanding about needing time off for medical and family emergencies.)

  4. Yes, but there is more. Not only do women enter fields that pay less, they also work less hard than men do and are less aggressive in the jobs they do.

Only in an industrialised society could people be offended by someone pointing out this reality - a modern society with a strong service-sector needs its women to value working hard and so attitudes (and socialisation) conform to that*. Hence, you can't say that women don't work as hard as men. And so people think that the fact that men sacrifice their family time, social time etc is to their credit, which is patently ridiculous. In any case, it doesn't matter how we feel about it, men work more hours and that's it.

Also, women have babies and that takes up more of their time and slows down their career path.

*However, people don't do what they are told. Women might be completely inculcated with the sense that they have to work hard, but the fact women are more social and less preoccupied by attaining high status than men, means that it doesn't matter how hard you can get women to work - men will work harder.

"so many thumbs down to those who agree -- yet not one (1) counter argument?" Yes, this is the feminist's Standard Operating Procedure. I knew it would happen, which is why I wrote the "Only in an industrialised..." paragraph.

  5. It depends on what you mean by "dangerous jobs". Women take many jobs that can expose them to hazards like robberies, rapes, physical assaults, hot liquids, and dangerous chemicals. Try working in places like a convenience store, a fast food restaurant, a hospital, or in a factory. Even being in a "safe" job like a real estate agent has it own hazards. There have been cases of women being attacked and raped when they showed people posing as buyers houses or sat alone in an open house on weekends.

  6. I agree.

  7. I think this is very true.  I read a book a year or so ago called 'The Politically Incorrect Guide to Women and Feminism' and the author said that the majority of women still occupied the same kind of jobs that the majority of women occupied fifty years ago - teaching, nursing, secretarial, retail, social work, hairdressing etc, jobs that tend to pay less than the kind of jobs that men are attracted to.  that's why women earn less than men, because the majority tend to be attracted to jobs that do not pay as much.

  8. Women often end up having to take poorly paid jobs in the Pink Collar Ghetto because these jobs offer them the flexibility they need (like part time work).  Aside from paid work outside the home, women still assume the bulk of childcare duties and housework.  Men have no such things to worry about.  Slowly but surely, things are changing and employers are starting to offer more flexible work arrangements on a grander scale.

Proof of this lies in the fact that  "...far more women than men view owning a business as the key to better work-life balance".  So they start up their own businesses from scratch at a much higher rate than men.

  9. LOL. What utter rubbish. hehehe

Thanks for providing me with my morning chuckle.

My suggestion to you: Do some statistical research on this topic. Find out the whys, wheres, and whos about this FACT that women get paid less in EXACTLY the same jobs as men.

You're sharing your opinion on something you clearly know nothing about. If you want to discuss or debate this issue, then get some education first.

  10. Disagree.

  11. of course

sexism and racism is strong in america.

  12. I agree wholeheartedly.

  13. I agree that few women take up the dangerous jobs but alot of times women get paid less for the exact same job.

  14. Agree. Then they complain because they earn less than men.

  15. AGREE

  16. Yes Sir, I agree. The wage disparity is very small when you factor in career choices, overtime, willingness to move for a promotion and several others factors.

  17. the pay disparity compares equal jobs - it compares apples to apples, not apples to oranges.

dangerous jobs? the #1 cause of death of a prostitute is homicide. housewives? 3 die a day. homicide is a leading cause of death of pregant women. 500,000 women die in the world from childbirth.

in other countries, women work in salt mines, agriculture (workng with pesticides), etc. In developing countries, women work from sun up to sun down, often nonstop.

it is not "random' that women are in lower paying, non unionized, c**p jobs - nor that minorities are.  in canada, they refer to women's jobs as the c's - something like clerical, caregiver, etc.

and, in fact, recent studies have found that caregiving jobs, dominated by females are highly stressful and demanding.

take another example - women work as maids in hotels & work nonstop, often at minimum wage, no health benefits, and hardly ever a tip.  but let a male porter roll up a luggage rack and boom, he's handed several dollars. (i know, i used to work at a hotel)....

as well, women have been trying to break into construction. the only jobs they give them is as flag wavers, making $7 an hour.  how do you survive on that?

NO, it's not always "our choice" to work lower paying jobs, there are many sociological factors, many factors about ingrained thinking of gender roles, discrimination, etc. playing a role.

we are to act like men to get ahead. we are to fit in - a round peg in a square hole.  let their be child care - onsite even - health benefits and pair pay.

women make up the majority of min wage jobs. min wage hasn't been raised in years. yet congressmen give themselves a big fat raise every year.

apparently, altho several million women are caring for their children alone, they somehow dont merit the status of "breadwinner" - no, that is reserved for male alone. it goes back a century when americans were leaving the farm to work in urban centers. the women got "pin money" for doing the same work as males ---the pay disparity has a loooong history.
