  1. The first person who responded has no idea what they're talking about.

To become an archaeologist at the lowest level (field tech. AKA shovel bum) you need to go through a field school. field school teaches you the techniques you need to work in the field. Some places will hire you without a college degree if you've gone through a field school, though not reputable places.

Generally you need a BA in Anthropology or Archaeology with field school experience. With a BA you learn not only field techniques but you learn history and a lot of methodology and theory and a lot of other aspects which are important to the job.

though if  you want to be a crew chief or anything above shovel bum you usually need a masters degree. to be a principal investigator you need a PhD.

Most work in archaeology these days is involved in CRM (Cultural Resource Management). Basically if a corporation or government agency, or anyone really, is going to break ground to do construction they must first hire archaeologists to investigate for anything of cultural or historic significance in the area.

  2. Well, it takes grad school, meaning after 4 years of college you need a 'minimum' of another 4 years of school in order to become an archaeologist.

The thing to keep in mind is that regardless of field work you will have to teach. All archaeologists when they aren't digging up stuff are teaching.

  3. start with explanining abt archaeology..

Archaeology is the study of human cultures through the recovery, documentation, and analysis of material remains and environmental data, including architecture, artifacts, biofacts, human remains, and landscapes. The goals of archaeology are to document and explain the origins and development of human culture, understand culture history, chronicle cultural evolution, and study human behavior and ecology, for both prehistoric and historic societies. It is considered, in North America, to be one of the four sub-fields of anthropology.

According to Indiana Jones and the movie world, archaeology is filled with constant excitement. In reality, however, the excavation process is slow and tedious, often involving strenuous physical work in grueling heat. For those in the field, the possibility of discovering artifacts from past civilizations is thrilling, regardless of the conditions.
