  1. Fill a jar with hot water, and stir in 1 tablespoon of salt per ounce of water, or until the salt no longer dissolves. Attach a nail to one end of a string, and the other end around a pencil. rest the pencil on the edge of the jar, and suspend the nail in the salted water so it hangs down, but does not touch the bottom of the jar. Put the jar in a warm place for a few days. Let the water evaporate, and the salt crystals form on the string. In some tropical areas, salt is not mined from the Earth. It is taken from sea water by this method. It works with sugar to. Good Luck.

  2. One really good science prac to do with kids without any permanent damage to your surrounds is to drop water balloons from different heights (waist height, off a balcony etc) and to measure how far the splash spreads, and how this changes depending on the distance of the drop. Doesn't really prove anything, but they have fun. Another one is to see how many helium balloons are required to make a toy pig fly- the helium balloons can be sold afterwards to make the cost less prohibitive. At any rate, have fun!
