  6. Lots of great answers already. One time when I subbed in a classroom the teacher had the children make birds nests. She gave them mud, sticks, string and I can't remember what else and they molded the mud into what they thought a birds nest would look like. They had to use their thumb and one finger to be more like a birds beak and add the extra items to the mud. It showed them how long this could take then too. It was messy and fun for the children.

    A Couple Examples:

    NATURE COLLAGE

Collect a variety of nature items:

sea shells, dried wheat, grasses, flowers, sand, rocks, pebbles, bark, twigs, seeds, and small branches.

Put these out with glue and foam trays for the children to create!

WORM FARM- HOW WORMS WORK IN THE GARDEN!!!

Cut the top off a plastic soda bottle, tape the edge. Pour in 2 inches gravel or stones for drainage (good way to get small rocks out of the yard!) Then, alternate 2 inches of sand, 2 inches of dirt. Put a few small pieces of banana peel in the middle for worm food. Continue with layers till top. Add worms, cover top with plastic wrap and tape, with a few air holes.

Tape black construction paper around bottle, and leave for a day or 2 --try to do this on a Friday. When you take the paper off, you will see the tunnels the worms have made, and the layers will have shifted and mixed. Great way to show how worms work in the garden!

    EGGHEAD

Crack the top 1/4 off of several eggs; wash out the insides and let dry. Have the kids draw silly faces on the eggs. Then, place damp cotton balls inside them, prop them in an egg carton so they stay upright, and drop some grass seed on the cotton balls. Before you know it, your eggshell people will sprout grass hair! (Keep the cotton moist, and your kids can actually trim the hair as it grows!)

    RAIN STICK #1 (heavy-duty)

    1. Hammer nails into Heavy cardboard mailing tubes 1/8" apart, using the spiral seam of the cardboard.

    2. Add several handfuls of assorted filler material (rice, beans, etc)

    3. Seal each end of the tube securely with tape.

    4. Decorate your stick with raffia, ribbon, adhesive-backed shelf paper, wrapping paper or a jungle print or decorations.

    RAIN STICK #2

Paper Towel Roll, Tape that can be painted, Paint, Glue, Uncooked Rice, Toothpicks...

Pre-poke holes into the side of the paper towel rolls. Have children poke toothpicks through the holes and glue each end of the tooth pick. Next- tape one end of the roll closed. Add rice and tape the other end. Then let the children paint their sticks as they choose. Last, cut off the toothpicks that stick out from the tube.

    Barb Shelby

  9. Make a Big flower with a name of a month on it, put how ever many days are in that month, each day the child can take a pedal off to count down the days!

  10. Preparing for  the birds(like a bird feeder or birdhouse). Anything to welcome our animal friends as spring is in the air.
