  1. To amplify Liberalvocalist's answer, if the note is a half note (open note with a stem) having a dot then the note is equal to three beats.

  2. The dot adds half the value of the note preceeding it... so no matter what the time signature is, it is "note value" + half.

For example, if it is a dotted half note in 4/4, it is 3 counts (half note=2, half of 2=1... 2+1=3).  A dotted quarter gets 1.5 counts (quarter note=1, half of 1=.5... 1+.5=1.5).

It can get a little harder to count when you start using wierd time signatures like 3/8, but it is the same concept.

    Hope this helped!

  3. ok a black circle with a straght stem is one beat. with a dot next to it, its one and a half. an open circle with a stem is two beats. an open circle with a stem and a dot next to it is three beats. an open circle with no stem is four beats

  4. if it's just a regular quarter note with a dot next to it then it has one and a half beats.

  5. ok so here goes a real fun explanation

if it is an eighth note with a dot next to it it is 3/4 of a beat

if it is a quarter note with a dot it is 1 1/2 beats

if it is a half note with a dot it is 3

    hope that helps
