  1. 1) Yes you can sign up

    2) Contact your local extension or 4-H office

    3) No you can be up to 18

    4) It depends on which club you join. My group only does showmanship.

    5) Yes, 99% of the time

    6) It depends on the group

    7) It depends on the group. Riding groups can help you fine tune your riding.

    8) Look up on Google your counties name and 4-H. That should direct you to the website for your county.

  2. I searched for 4-H clubs in Sacramento, and this is what I found.  http://cesacramento.ucdavis.edu/4h/

I did not scour the site, but contact them, and they should help you get started.

I was in 4-H from age nine, until I graduated from high school.  I think that it is great for kids.  You should be eligible until you turn 19 I believe.  I did horses in 4-H the whole time.  I just did western events.  I had a lot of fun, and it gave my barrel and pole bending horses a change of pace doing judged events at our county shows.  I think that this would be the perfect thing for you.  There are usually riders of varying  ability.  Do not get discouraged if you are not the best one at first.  Have fun and learn as much as you can!

  3. Sometimes they have different 4-H websites for each state or something.

Try googling your states 4-H clubs and look on their information.

I dont think youre too old for it, either.

If you join a horse 4-H Club then theyll be teaching the basics of horse caring and things and Im not so sure bout the meetings, but I heard sometimes you have to do projects.

  4. 4h.org is the official site for that organization. I don't think you are too old for it.

Are there riding instructors where you board your Appaloosa? Or is this your own farm, ranch?

The local Girl Scouts might be able to help you, too. When I was a kid, they taught me to ride.

I don't know what area of the country you are in but I'm sure there are horse/pony clubs for you to contact.

Or you might try a local farm extension organization.

Your Vet might have the names of people who can help you and the feed store where the horse feed is bought can probably help you, too.

ALL SORTS OF INFO out there, honey!!

I'm certain that you'll get all sorts of helpful info from the good folks at ANSWERS, too.

    Bless the animals.

  5. Here is your local club's website:

    http://clubs.ca4h.org/sacramento/

Call or e-mail them, and they will help you get started.

    Have Fun!

  6. 1.Yes you can

2.Finding a club on Yahoo! Groups

3.No 19 is (18 last year you can)

    4.Show,jump,drive,dressage,rein,game

    5.Yes you can

    6.All depending on leader

    7.Rules and stuff about horses

    8. 4-h.org

  7. Contact your local University Extension office they can direct you to clubs in your area.  There are some clubs that are horse related, some that are not.

Some stables offer 4-H lessons or discounts.  Ask around and when you join you may find friends that would be willing to car pool to help alleviate any extra stuff on your mom.

Also explain to your mom that 4-H is educational and looks good on those college applications and scholarship applications.

  8. 4-H is a great club to join.  You can be a member until you are 18 years old.  I think its too late in the year to use your horse as a project (most fairs are in August), but you can still join the club, and start getting ready for next year's events.  The meetings usually each have a focus on something specific (in my club, memebers would take turns doing presentations, or we would have a speaker, work on our projects, etc).

You might want to try to find a club that is mostly horses.  Talk to your local Farm Bureau for information on clubs in your area.

Besides just doing the riding part of 4-H, you can also look into things like public speaking, demonstrations, Horse Bowl, Hippology (study of the horse), and horse judging.  There are local, state, and national competitions for these (and even some scholarship awards).  I started out with Horse Bowl and judging before I even bought a horse, and learned a lot....it helped me with college, and helped me when I finally did get the horse for 4-H.

There is so much value to take out of being an active participant.  Talk to your Farm Bureau, and maybe check out this year's fair so you can see what you have in store for you next year.  You can do more than one project (I did horses, dogs, and photography!)

  10. I only know the answers to a few of these questions. I was going to sign up, but never did.

Can I sign up for 4-H?

    - Absolutely. I believe sign-ups are in the spring. I'm not absolutely sure. Check out the website. I would assume sign-ups are on there somewhere.

    How do I start?

    - Sign up. That's pretty much it. When you sign up, they will tell you when the meetings start.

    Am I too old?

    - Absolutely not. I have known people who are 18 and still in 4-H.

    Can I use my horse?

    - Absolutely. Actually, I think you have to use your own animal. That's part of the 4-H experience.

    What website?

I'm not sure about the other questions because I never signed up, but I would assume most of it is fun and educational. Most 4-H's have classes for every type of rider. The 4-H near me had english, western, trail, halter, showmanship, and even more for their horse people. And you also have hogs, sheep, cattle, and more animals too.

It sounds like 4-H would be something really great for you to get into. I hope you can get in and get showing soon. I have had many friends in 4-H programs that had an absolute blast. I hope you do too.
