My son is usually very good and when I say no he knows not to ask again. But in the last few weeks he has been crying over everything and arguing with me. For example, last night, he asked for a hampster that a friend of mine was giving away. When I said no he asked again and again and yelled. When I still said no he ran in the house and cried or about 10 minutes. He even said he hated our cat and didnt want him anymore thinking that if we didnt have him I wold let him get a Hampster. I have been very proud so far that he listens so well. Other moms cant beleive how good he is. I am afraid that it is only gonna get worse. Could it just be a phase? What do I do???

  1. I know that a lot of influence comes from school, TV, or just going to public places. Some times kids see some other kids doing something them they think its ok to do the same. "Monkey see monkey do". So what I as a mom would do is keep an eye out on what channels my kids are watching and when you guys go out and you see that your child is watching another child "act up", make sure you tell him/her that that kind of behavior is inappropriate and say that if he/she ever acted like that you would give a very severe punishment. Good luck.

  2. The best thing you can do is NOT argue back. try and offer a simple reason for your answer and if he tries to argue you just say "case closed, we are not discussing this" and walk away. Don't get into the bad habit of bickering back and forth with more reasons why he can't and so on. It will only make him argue more.

when my kids aged 13, 13 11 and 8 try and argue I say to them "end of discussion" if they continue they get a warning "if you say another word about it, you will lose a privilage". That usually ends it right there because they KNOW I will follow through and they will lose something. Once I've said that they know there is no way I'm changing my mind. I also make a point not to change my mind often. I think before I answer with yes or no because If I say no and then decide it's not a big deal and change my mind then they will think they can change my mind more by arguing. So always think before answering and if the answer is no tell him ahead that you won't be changing your mind by saying something like "I've given it a lot of thought, and I decided that a hamster is not a good idea because....." then if he starts to argue you say "this isn't up for discussion, I made up my mind and that's it" if he continues then you give the warning about another word. Let him go to his room and cry if he wants and offer him a hug when he's calmed down and be understanding. Tell him "I know it's hard when things don't go your way but you have to learn to deal with it and that not everything will be the way you want it. You have to wait until he's comletely calmed down and over it though so he won't get back into begging for it again.

another thing that can help is to reword your answer. Instead of saying "no hamster" you can say "a hamster isn't a good idea right now but maybe at some point in the future"

    good luck

  3. maybe he's been around kids at school or friends that do that or even older kids who do that and he admires them so he copies them I"m only 13 but i do know that many 6 year olds copy what teens do or try to anyway

  4. I know exactly how you are feeling. I am dealing with this right now. My son was the same way. I was always very proud of how he listened. What i have been reading lately though is that when a child sees how independent he is becoming or how much of a "big boy" he is, it can frighten him a little bit. regressing to more baby like behavior like whining and tantrums is just a way of expressing this.  The arguing is a test between how much of a big boy he is and how much of a little boy. He is just testing the waters.Do not worry it is just a part of being a big kid and he will out grow it. Hope this helps and good luck =)
