  1. 4 days is a great chunk, it is not a lot of time and you will enjoy it here. The YHA Hostel on Manchester is a great place to stay for budget accomomodation. It is right near the Square- the center of town and you can get hooked up with anything at the Information Centre next to Starbucks there.

Hanmer Springs is like a weird little water park, but the hot pools are very nice to sit in on a cold July day. You needn't leave town if you are only hitting Chch for 4 days, though. There are the museums near the Arts Centre (markets held every Saturday) There is The Strip for all your nightlife needs- that would be Oxford Terrace on a map. Oh, I could go on. We live here and I'm from Philadelphia- I don't find it boring. See some links:

  2. There is plenty to do in Christchurch and yes Hanmer springs is definetly worth a visit if you have the time. its a 1.5 hour drive away and once there you must must must blob out in the hot thermal pools. also take a walk up conical hill for great views, there will be snow present so will look lovely up there (its a 20 minute walk). also heaps of cool shops to look in there.

    Christchurch activities:

    Gondola,

    Museum

    Arts centre / arts gallery

International Antarctic Centre which has a snow room, little blue penguins and a hagglund ride which is worth the extra $10 (hagglunds are the vehicles used in antarctica)

Willowbank and Orana park are two animal parks, both have kiwis though the kiwi area at willowbank is better BUT Orana park is much bigger and has Lions, tigers, rhinos, cheetahs etc.

    The tram

    The Gondola

    Ferrymead Heritage park

Also take a drive to New Brighton beach and walk along the Pier AND drive over to Sumner beach for a coffee then over to Lyttelton through the tunnel.

Another out of town drive thats worth it is round Banks Peninsula to Akaroa. its a French infused village with french road signs etc. Stop in at Barrys bay farm on the way over to sample some cheese.

In Akaroa you can go on a wildlife cruise (or you can do a wildlife cruise in Lyttelton) or go swimming with the dolphins and just soak up the atmosphere in one of the many tasty bakeries or cafes.

  4. Get a really nice hotel, where you can spend all 4 days. Christchurch is one massive retirement village, and extremely boring. There is nothing to do. I suggest you stay in your hotel the whole time.

  5. Christchurch is a great city. You will not see everything in four days. Walk in Hagley Park, visit the fantastic Art Gallery, The old museum and Arts buildings are interesting with Crafts etc. Go out to Sumner beach, and Brighton is also nice.

Catch the gondola up to the top of the Port Hills for a view over Lyttleton etc. If you can drive or do a day tour go to Akaroa. There are a lot of fun activities including the Antarctic Encounter near the airport.
