  1. grin, we so forget the obvious.  First, you have to define "Midwest".  Is it the area from just west of the Appalachians or to  the Mississippi?  Or the area from Illinois to Iowa and north to Wisconsin?  Or from Kansas north to Canada (known as the northern Great Plains in this part of the woods)

Corn, wheat and soybeans are the primary grain crops.  Wheat is in this mix as it is a rotation crop for either beans or corn and offers the option of being either a spring or winter crop.  On the southern end of the "Midwest", specifically Kansas, it is frequently used as a grazing crop and as graze and grain.

Because of the tremendous grain production, multiple concentrated animal operations have developed.  These include hog and cattle operations, both dairy and beef.  Poultry production continues to increase in the "Midwest" but is not as dramatic as seen in the southeastern USA.

Beef cattle operations are the dominant in number of operators across the USA.  This operation is favored by those farmers that own land in a rural area and keep a job in town.  Equine and ovine operations continue to increase in number as the number of bovine operations continue to decline.

Because of the number of animal operations that have always been part of the Midwest, the number one product is now, and always has been; Forages.

Forages are grazed or preserved herbaceous plant materials primarily used to feed livestock, including horses.  In the future, these plant materials will become part of the energy pipeline (biofuels).  This enterprise constitutes more acreage and more income (money spent, not necessarily taxable income) than all of the other commodities mentioned.

  2. Corn, soybeans, hogs, cattle.

  3. corn wheat sorghum soybeans cotton....probably depends on what states you are specifically talking about.

  4. one of them should be wood i guess

  5. Not cotton! Wheat, corn, beef, soybeans, oats, milk. Wheat is the main crop followed by corn. Cotton is a more southern crop and the hardwood forests of the midwest were logged to near extinction years ago.

  6. Corn, Soybeans, Wheat, and Cotton.
