  1. My baby started on rice cereal when she was 8 weeks old... by my doctor's instructions. I personally don't think there is anything wrong with feeding them cereal early on. She never had any issues digesting it, just make sure it's rice cereal and that it's quite runny and not too thick. My daughter is 5 month old now and she's eating Heinz baby foods.

  2. yes thats exactly what it means

If solids are started before a baby's system is ready to handle them, they are poorly digested and may cause unpleasant reactions (digestive upset, gas, constipation, etc.). Protein digestion is incomplete in infancy. Gastric acid and pepsin are secreted at birth and increase toward adult values over the following 3 to 4 months. The pancreatic enzyme amylase does not reach adequate levels for digestion of starches until around 6 months, and carbohydrate enzymes such as maltase, isomaltase, and sucrase do not reach adult levels until around 7 months. Young infants also have low levels of lipase and bile salts, so fat digestion does not reach adult levels until 6-9 months.

  4. He's kind of little for cereal yet, I'd think.  Back when your MIL raised her kids, it was probably common to start babies on cereal that young.  Most Docs say 12 months now days, but we started our second baby on cereal at 6 mos because she was always hungry.  You pretty much just have to go with the flow and do what's right for your baby.  Obviously, you know better than your MIL, but whenever in-laws are concerned, you have to tread carefully to keep the peace.  :)

Either way, your baby will be fine.

  5. My big issue is not that the baby is pooping like cereal but that your MIL is deliberately going against your request that she not feed him the stuff.

Most doctors now don't recommend babies, particularly breast-fed babies, not to eat solid foods until they're 4-6 months old.  If he has just started eating cereal the change in diet might cause the change in what comes out at the other end, so it will probably go away in a couple of days.  Just in case, call your pediatrician and ask him/her.

In the meantime, you need to lay down the law to the mother-in-law or you will be fighting this battle the REST OF HER LIFE.  I am not kidding here...

  6. It won't hurt him, but maybe she is making it too thick. It needs to be really watery at that age.
