Question:

4 month old teething question?

My little guy will be 4 months on the 16th and we thought he has started teething. I say thought because I felt his gums, and felt a little hard spot- when we looked it looked just like a tooth, or so I thought. Then the next day at daycare his provider said she didn't think it was a tooth because it felt soft. Well, now it seems the tooth has kind of gone back in, or is not as pronounced as it was. Is this possible for the teeth to retract? Maybe swollen gums? Or any ideas what a spot like this could be, if it's not a tooth?

  1. Hey!l..that happened w/ my daughter too..she was 4 1/2 months, and drooling like mad, so i'd rub her gums lots to check...and on the bottom she had what looked like a tooth that was getting close to pop...that SAME evening i tried to show my husband and there was nothing...but a ton of drool!...he teased me for abit about it...then would ask me if she was singing her abc's..etc...i still have no idea why i thought she had a tooth ready to pop b/c her first tooth didn't come through until she was 8 months old!!!!.....neat!~...

  2. Teething is really a pretty slow process with lots of stages. It may be that the gum around the tooth is now swollen, and fluid has built up making it feel soft. Most babies do not get their first tooth until 7 or 8 months, but might start the teething process as early as 4 months. Hang in there.
