Question:

4 stroke maintenance?

I was looking to buy a 4 stroke bike in the near future, and I was wondering if this was a good idea.

My neighbor told me that a 4 stroke bike took more maintenance than a 2 stroke.

I do keep my 2 stroke rm 250 in tip top condition, since I race.

I was wondering if 4 strokes take alot more maintenace than 2 strokes or about the same amount.

Any information is valued, thanks.

  1. If you race a 250 stroker like you say, you already know the answer to this question.

  2. if u race then y dont u know but any way 2 strock and 4 are about the same but 2 strocks have 2 times more power

                                  c ya .........

  3. any bike that you want to keep in great running condition requires some maitenance. yes you will have to maintain it, but on a 4 stroke you must remember that you will have to maintain the valves as well as all the other stuff.....like you do on a 2 troke. I was leary about the same thing as you, but I am happy with the change to a 4 stroke.

you will also find it easier to go fast on a 4 stroke, sounds a bit weird, but true....

  4. c'mon dude.. 4strokes need alot more attention maybe not right off the bat but there are much more moving parts, oil pump, valves. you cant give a 4stroke constant rpms

I to ride 2 stroke and ride wheelies up all the hills , but when I get a new bike its gonna be a new honda 450. and Im keepn my yz 250 rocket ship.

KB2002-- yes More moving parts will cause more maintenance especially if you do not do the preventative c**p.. I have been riding for a good part of my life bud like 20 years too. This aint my first pony ride..been goin to local races, supercrosses and every Hangtown and Glen Helen Outdoor National for more than 10 years seen every bike.. the only reason there are no more 2strokes is because they are easier to ride ( you should know they have more traction control and engine braking ) also the corrupt government we live ...under put these pollution regulations down and because of that I cannot ride in my normal spots because people with 4strokes go there and they are so DANG LOUD!! Everyone of my 4stroke buds have takin their bike in for service ( Yamaha,Honda, KTM) I can rebuild my top end and put a new clutch in and ride the same day.  Dont get me wrong they do have power( Hey what about the 500cc.soooooooo much more power than a 400 4stroke but there aint no more of those????)

I dont want to argue w/u but I would like to go riding w/u so you can remember what a dirtbike smells like.

    peace out.

  5. i don't think 4 strokes nees more maintenance.

i have a 4 stroke and rarely do anything to it.

my brother races a 2 stroke and does more maintence to his bike.

  6. The only difference between the two is occasional valve adjustment, no big deal. I've been racing 2 strokes for years. I just got my first 4 stroke race bike in 2006 and I'm hooked. No more 2 strokes for me...

Marcus, having more moving parts does not equate into more maintenance, maybe more things that can fail but that does not fall under maintenance. I've been racing for over 20 years. Trust me, there is no major difference in maintenance between 2 and 4 strokes. I don't know if any of you guys actually race or even go to races but almost no one riding a class higher than 85cc is on a 2 stroke. Numbers don't lie. If they were problematic or unreliable in any way everyone wouldn't be racing them.
