4 year old with Food (Nut) Allergies, we're moving to Germany - Are there warnings on labels?

I have a 4 year old with severe nut allergies. Here most products are labeled if they come into contact with peanuts or tree nuts. How are things in Germany? Is SoyNut Butter available there? We will be there for 2 years so I want to bring a case with us if it is not. Thanks for all your help!

On some products, it will be, but not on all.Like most of the things here. Ya i would take a case over with you like you said, cause its better to be safe than sorry you know.

On the backside of the packages, all the ingredients have to be labeled. If products which normally don´t contain nuts could have come into contact with nuts there will usually be written:

"Kann Spuren von Nüssen enthalten" ("Could contain traces of nuts") e.g. on chocolate,...

I THINK it is law to label this (as long as many people have nut allergies)

Until you learn enough German to figure out if there are warning labels, I would have your father-in-law pick put some of the items at the commissary on post. I really can't remember if there are warning labels, but then again I wasn't looking for them. Since you will be living in Stuttgart there will more than likely be someone in one of the grocery stores who speaks English and could help show you what to look for. All ingredients are listed on the box but as everyone has stated, they´re in German. But since you´ll be there for 2 years, you ´ll definitely pick up enough of the language if you try!

Peanuts are Erdnüsse, pecans are Pecanüsse (but not that commonly sold), walnuts are Walnüsse. Since your child is 4 you will probably want to put her in a german Kindergarten (starts at 3 and is a great experience for your kid) so just make sure they understand. Nut allergies are not that common in Europe but every Kindergarten understands the restrictions that come with them. And by the way, if you ever need to seek a pediatrician or any other doctor for anything, Germany has a great health care system so don´t worry about not getting good medical care in case your 4 year old gets sick!

No dearth of labels and warnings. But the trouble is it is all in the well known sweet language called Deutsche :-). Watch out for 'Mindestens haltbar bis' which means the expiry date.
