40,000 km pipe is a ring that fits snugly around the earth. as the pipe is warmed 1 degree C, it gets longer and is not snug anymore.(expansion from heat) consider expansion of radial distance from center of earth by applying geometry to relate circumference and radius...C = 2 pie r

  1. forget about the size of the pipe (40,000 km ......... all c**p)

    now first figure out the distance that it expand assuming its a straight rod.

    lets say it expands 1km ok

    so now c= 2 pie r

    c= 1lm

    and solve for r= .15km

    and thats how much loose the pipe to the earth would be

    or the distance from the ground

  2. Low carbon steel expands at a rate of 10.7 x 10^-6 m/m/C

    The total expansion = 4.0 x 10^7 m x 1 C x 10.7 x 10^-6 m/m/C = 428 meters

    To get the radial growth divide by 2 pi

    The pipe is 68 meters above ground level
