Question:

40 CFR 60.112b speaks of oil tank pressure in kPa. However, it does not specify absolute or gauge. any clues?

Anyone with experience with the EPA with regard to pressure, it would be most helpful.

  1. The difference between absolute and guage pressure is about 14.5 psi (100 kPa), so if the pressure range is above 10,000 kPa it really doesn't matter whether it is 10,000 kPa absolute, or 10,100 kPa gauge -- the difference is 1% which is probably less than the accuracy of the pressure gauge.

    If the pressures in question are in the zero-to-1000 kPa range, then it does matter, and for safety-sake, you should assume the worst-case which is absolute pressure.
