40 Year Old Grocery Store Bagger?

I'm a part time checker at an Albertsons. I was wondering why would someone at that age be a bagger. I know this guy thats worked for over 20 years and still was only offered and accepted a bagger position that pays 1 buck less than what I make? The deli and other areas of the store are filled with kids starting their first jobs and getting more money. Isn't that strange? How can someone who is still attending high school get a better job and wage than someone who has graduated and worked at various companies for 20 years?

  1. He must really enjoy his job.

  2. thats sad :(

  3. Hmm.. maybe the 40 year old doesn't want to work in the deli with a bunch of KIDS!!!!!!!  :)))))))))))))))))))

  4. Maybe he fell on hard times and accepted any job he could get at the time. He could be having financial difficulties and doing whatever he can to rectify his situation. I wouldn't judge a person because of the type of job he works...you may not know his situation and the circumstances surrounding his reasoning to accept that particular job. He may also have a disablity/long standing injury that prevents him from doing things like stocking, etc. I think it's commendable he even has a job unlike a lot of people who lie around complaining all of the time.

  5. He might be mentally challenged.  I worked for a grocery store and generally they hired mentally challenged people to bag.

WTF?  Thumbs down for that?  I was being honest.

  6. He might be disabled.  Disabled people receive a monthly check from Social Security, but it's not a lot of money, and they're allowed to work so many hours a month and make a certain amount of money as well.

  7. maybe its his second job

    or

maybe he is semi retired/ ex military

dont knock someone for there job.  youd be surprised who has a college degree at low end jobs

  8. he might have trouble or he didn't graduate college and now he is working in some food store.

  9. Maybe something really crappy happened to him.

I have a friend who is 50 or so and he had to take a really crappy job.

He had  been a truck driver all his life and made pretty good money, but when he lost his eye in that knife fight they said he couldn't drive anymore.

Now he works at Jiffy Lube down in the pit changing oil for 8 dollars an hour, and when he gets hot oil in his only eye the boss docks his pay until he can go back to work.

But he is trying to support his family and he has to do it until he can get back on his feet somehow.

Be nice to the guy. He may be under tremendous stress.

And he could still have that knife.

  10. maybe that is all he wants maybe he is happy with it

  11. I worked at a grocery store and yeah, they do generally hire mentally challenged people to bag.. and the ones that are adults are a bit slow definitely. But at least he's working!

  12. You have no history or MO.  You have potentially 20 years more profits to make for any co. you work for that a 40 year old.  Some people don't make it and those who do have to hang on for dear life not to lose their position and end up bagging or some such.  Maybe he had drug, drink, mental problems or got busted for something.  You never know what cards you're going to get or how things will play out.  Life is not like a box of chocolates!  Certainly being positive and realistic helps but everyone expects youth to get some chances.  Plenty of people blow their chances w/out even knowing it or just can't handle the stress of hanging on day after day, it's a long haul to 65.
