I purchased the above engine a few weeks ago, put in on my boat and just now got it in the water. It won't start. I am sure I have it all hooked up ok. Sometimes it sputters a little. and then dies. Sometimes is coughs and then nothing.

Do you hold the red shift release on the shift and accelerator lever up or do you hold you mouth just so, what is the secret. I put new plugs in before trying it.

  1. That's right Stone you need to engage the shift release (aka neutral lock-out).

Also make sure the fuel primer bulb is primed till it gets hard and facing in the right direction, there is an arrow on the bulb which points towards the engine.

The key starter also has a choke integrated into it by pushing the key in this will engage the choke mechanism.

So you have to do all three procedures.

    1.  Prime fuel bulb.

    2.  Engage neutral lock-out move the lever forward or up depending on the control-box set-up.

    3.  Turn the key to start and push in the key (choke) hold the choke till it starts.

P.S.  Don't let the revs get to high and just long enough to get the engine running smooth. You can try and hold your mouth just so but I find squinting a little bit helps a lot too.

    Try that and good luck.

  2. If it sat for a while the carbs may need to be cleaned out. Verify spark, compression, and if they are good look at carbs or other parts of the fuel system.
