  1. The Vietnam Dong is one of the least valued currency units in the world, which is why the exchange rate of a dollar to Dong is in the thousands of Dongs (a little over 16,000 to be more exact). The real benchmark of U.S. buying power is the cost of living index.

Vietnam's cost of living is about 1/8th that of living in the U.S. A better way of explaining this is the lifestyle you would live in the U.S. on $3,000/month would cost you only about $375/month to do so in Vietnam. This is why Vietnam is a great bargain for Americans to travel or live. You can live like a king on an average U.S. paycheck in Vietnam.

As for it being disgraceful for Americans to visit Vietnam. Those who say that are not well informed or continue to live in the past. It would be more disgraceful to continue hating a country or people because ignorance has blinded them. They should realize that  people don't cause wars. Governments cause wars that cause people to die in them.

  2. I don't get your point re the currency ... prices adjust.

You should note that less than 40% of the Vietnamese population were born before 1975, so very few Vietnamese have any personal memories or experience from the war.

Moreover, the attitude among the veterans I met was: "The war is over. VC won, USMC lost, we liberated our country and that's it".

No animosity or hatred against Americans or French.

  3. i'm not sure what your asking ,  but you can do ok as a tourist for $30 a day staying at "backpacker" hotels and traveling around on buses... if you want to "live it up " at places like the REX & Caravel hotels [rooms start at &250]... you'll need 3-4 hundred a day.

ive done both .. i preffer the "backpacker trail" its more down to earth... its deffinately the way one SHOULD expierience viet nam .   i dont know anybody anywhere who thinks it's a disgrace for americans to visit viet nam.

  4. The $400 goes a long way over there.  A good hotel room is around $45 US.  They have very beautiful beaches.  The war is over and by gones are by gones.  We travel to Vietnam every summer and never have had anyone give me trouble for being an American.

  5. Well, at the best hotels your 6,468,000 dong might get you one or two nights depending on whether you get a suite or a deluxe room, although you can get a pretty decent hotel for around $50. Figure about $100-$175 or so for most 4 and 5 star hotels. At least you can say you spent a couple of million on your hotel. By the way, it's not a disgrace to come to Vietnam, the Vietnamese people have somehow forgiven Americans and treat them well, very well.
