I have a ford 429 with approximately 12 thousandths wear, the machine shop i went to says it needs to be bored 30 over to be 100%, okay but wouldnt it still be okay if i just did a re re-ring engine rebuild kit instead of having to buy new oversize pistons and pieces? Would the engine be good, lots of power, smoke? what will happen if i only re ring it instead of bore?

  1. The wear you see it at the top of the cylinder.  You'll find that there is little or no wear at the bottom.  This means that the cylinder is cone shaped.  The rings would compress in and out on the cylinder bore resulting in broke rings.

  2. Well if the machine shop thinks there is enough wear for .30 bore job, then there must have been some metal that scored the cylinders pretty good.  Those scores can scar or break your rings and leave you back at square 1 all over again...  With the bore job and the proper rings and pistions you will obtain stock or better performance out of your engine and it will last many more miles than just a re-ring job anyways...

  3. Smoke and loss of power. Have a re bore +20 not +30 But you are going to have to do the main bearings and big ends.
