  1. I know the feeling, I drive 51 miles each way 5 times a week. I took this job and make $14,000 more a year. However, I drive an SUV and with current gas prices going up, I spent $800 just in fuel last month. 800 x 12 = $9,600.00. So my income really only increased $4,400. Plus it's about 1-1/2 commute each way.

Was it worth it?  This is the best job I have ever had. Very little stress. I am looking into a car with better MPG to drive. LOL

  2. These days, making even the least bit of more money in income is worth it.  My husband recently got a job in a city over 2 hours away.  Before his job was 5 minutes down the road.  But he makes more money and now has benefits.  We are also in the process of relocating so his drive will only be 45 minutes.

    I would take it!!

  3. Sure, but why not move closer to work?

  4. no, think of how board you'll get! plus the raise will just be enought to pay for the petrol

  5. How about the weather, do you have bad winters that you have to drive that far in?

  6. An hour drive to a new job...hmm. Factor in the time spent in traffic going to and from work and the wear and tear on the vehicle and not to mention gas. I'd find a closer place to live.

  7. depends what kind of car you drive

  8. You should state what you drive, but don't be concerned with the money, but what the job will bring you in the future. I would drive up to 45 minutes (no traffic) for work that is a good stepping stone.

  9. Man, I drive 20 miles one way and it takes me a little over an hour (Washington DC). Your commute makes me jealous.

  10. $7000 raise for 45 miles, h**l Yeah! Well, unless your daily commuter is a huge diesel truck and you go in and out of work at rush hour.

  11. 25 minutes times 5 times a week times 50 weeks/60=about 104 hours. $7000 divided by 104 is about $70. Is it worth $70 an hour to drive another 25 mintues a day to you?

  12. Do the math 25 extra miles a day (if it's round trip) amounts to 5200 extra miles a year. If it's one way 25 miles then it's double that. Divide that by your average MPG and see how many extra gallons you'll use then times the price per gallon and you'll see what the additional mileage will take away from that $7000 raise.

  13. Uhm...Yes.  I commute 24 miles to work ONE WAY 6 days a week.  Take the money.

  14. do the math at today's gas prices and what gas prices are projected to be. Divide that by the potential $7000 raise. Add the time lost each way (2 hours on the road versus the 40 minutes a day you now spend.) Is it worth it?

  15. It's not always about the money.  Do you hate to deal with traffic during your 20 minute now?  Will your commute interfere with your family's needs if you have one?  I've done the 45 mile commute and it's definitley doable without going insane.  Where I live, you pretty much have to drive atleast 30 miles one way to get a decent paying job.

  16. Depends on the opportunity.

You will probably still not spend $7,000 more in gas per year, but it is going to take you a little longer, which can affect your personal outlook on your career and life.

I would do it if the new job will set you up better in your future career.  You can always move if the opportunity is more likely to lead to a better career.

  17. I would think it is. Especially if it something you like doing. 7000.00 is a lot of money

  18. The great unknown is how HIGH is gas gonna get?!!?!?  If it goes to $5/gallon, it wont take long to burn up that 7K raise....I think I would either stay where I was at, move closer, or look into a moped
