Question:

480 volts vs 460 volts, three phase?

I am installing a few 3 phase motors with the highest rated nameplate voltage of 460. We have 480v at our panel. Is the 460 and 480 compatible? Or is the 460v RMS and the 480v peak? Thanks

  1. You should not have a problem, in fact at 480 volts you will use less current. If your motor runs backwards just reverse two of the legs

  2. Panel voltage of480 volts, 3-phase is all right for 460 volts motors. The voltage will usually reduce to 460 volts when many.motors  are operating. Motors can operate +/- 10% of their nameplate rating.

  3. They are essentially the same.

All voltages have a nominal and a tolerance on each side of it. For example US household is 115 (or 117 or 118) nominal, and it can be between 110 and 120, or sometimes between 105 and 125 volts.

480 is a nominal also, and it can be 440 to 480 or even 490 volts.
