49ers’ Davis explains his criticism of team-mate Crabtree
After an altercation between Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree of the San Francisco 49ers, Davis explained what the argument was about. Davis is one of the 49ers’ captains and was simply speaking as a leader. Davis had confronted Crabtree in the locker room and coach Mike Singletary had to break up their argument.
"I was just expressing the way I felt at the moment. I just pretty much said whatever was on my mind at the time. Just pretty much giving him a check, getting his head leveled and just getting on him about some things he did in the past," said Davis.
Davis said that his issue with Crabtree wasn’t personal, just football related. Crabtree has been battling injury from the start of training camp and has not spoken to reporters and hardly to team-mates since 1 August .
He’s already developed the reputation of being a difficult player to work with. Last season Crabtree didn’t sign his rookie contract until October. Davis meanwhile was an All-Pro last season, tying the record for touchdowns by a tight end in one season (13).
"I hope he got the message," Davis said. "I think he did, I strongly believe, but if anything I see that I feel is wrong or that needs to be addressed, then I'm going to say something. I don't really have any frustrations with Michael. He just did some things during that time that I didn't like. That's all. ... It was basically taking ownership."
The 49ers’ offence has not been together on the field all preseason. They’ll look to find their stride in the season opener next Sunday in a divisional matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. They are coming off an 8-8 season and are being picked by many to finally return to the playoffs after a seven-year drought. Both Crabtree and Davis said they are moving on and Singletary feels the incident will make the team stronger.
