49ers of Long Beach State complete winning streak of three matches – Volleyball news
The Long Beach State men’s volleyball team completed the winning streak of three matches after beating California State Northridge on Friday, February 3.
The 49ers of Long Beach State dominated the opposite side and finished the match in straight sets. They sent 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) on board to earn the winning status in match. The Walter Pyramid, which is an indoor multipurpose stadium in Cal State
University, hosted the match in the presence of large crowd.
The 11th-ranked Long Beach State proved to be better in every aspect of the game and amazed the spectators with their flawless performance. It was first victory for 49ers at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament.
So far, the 49ers have appeared in nine matches of the running season. In the first eight matches, they stood with an even record of 4-4. However, the success against Matadors of Cal State improved their win/loss ratio to 5-4. The 49ers will continue their
MPSF slate at home next weekend as they are scheduled to meet No. 7 Stanford Cardinal on next Friday and No. 12 Pacific on Saturday. First serve for both fixtures is 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The LBSU squad is determined to repeat the same brilliant act
in coming matches.
Speaking of the last match against Matadors, the 49ers hit with a blistering percentage of .423. Senior Brad Hemmerling, sophomore Taylor Crabb, and Senior Ryan Meehan played amazingly well and let LBSU to success. Moreover, Sophomore Jeff Ornee and sophomore
Connor Olbright equally contributed to the victory of 49ers. The team put up combined effort and held off Cal State for 3-0 victory.
The LBSU showed the thirst for victory right from the opening of the match. They formed nice combinations and added quick points. The Matadors could not stand the power of fast spikes and cross court shots by the LBSU attackers. Cal State suffered the frequent
set-backs and trailed behind, while 49ers went up on scoreboard.
Matadors progressed at snail’s pace and eventually had to accept the better status of 49ers in first frame. They scored only 16 points, while the LBSU hit the mark with set points at 25. Meehan and Ornee of LBSU gathered all the attention in first set due
to their wonderful feat.
The LBSU carried the momentum into the following set and Ornee put the team in lead at 11-4. The Matadors delivered a couple of nice shots and managed to shorten the gap of points but resilient rival remained ahead in the game. Eventually, the Matadors took
its first lead in the set at 18-17. The 49ers retook the lead but Cal State tied the score at 19-all. Afterwards, LBSU used back-to-back attacks and left Matadors behind. 49ers captured second set, 25-19.
After losing two sets in row, the Matadors played under pressure and dropped third set (20-25), which declared victory for 49ers.
