I have a handset with a 4P4C plug on a curly wire, which then connects to the handset. Can I connect this plug into an RJ11 jack, as would be found on a dial-up modem?

  1. No, don't do this. It will work intermittently but due to the wrong size plug, you will lose contact. Spend a buck for the right cord. I spent 25 yrs. fixing these mistakes.

  2. Apart from the slightly different physical size of the plugs, connecting the transmitter and/or receiver in the handset directly to the phone line won't work anyway.  The jacks on dial-up modems are generally just line in and line out.  You need to plug a complete phone into the latter jack, not just a handset.

  3. yes, sorta. the pins fit the jack, but the plastic is a bit small so you need to make sure it is seated correctly.
