I will be taking my mare to her first 4-h show on august 9th and was wondering if they will accept the fact that i give my own vaccines or does the vet have to administer them?

  1. Well, what state are you in.  To the best of my knowledge you can give your own vaccines, but you'll have to check your state's rule book.  Even huge AQHA World and other large organizations don't require proof of vaccines by a veterinarian.  You will be required to show proof that your horse is negative for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) via a coggins test.  Coggins tests must be performed by a veterinarian.  You will have "Coggins Papers" that you will need to give copies of to the show committee, typically.

Anyway, have fun - don't be afraid to ask questions.  Your 4H leaders are always happy to help and have oodles of information ready to give you.  Don't be shy!

  2. I believe you must have veterinary documentation for certain vaccines.  call up a local veternarian--he or she will know.

  3. i'm in VA, and i've done most of my own vaccines for the past few years. 4h never had a problem.

  4. Yes, if you show, you must have documentation that your vet has administered the vaccinations (you your vet has witnessed you administering the vaccinations). If you don't it doesn't matter so long as the records are accurate and correct. However, as long as you have accurate records and the vet has done your horse's coggins test (negative) you may be OK since it's just 4H and probably isn't a huge show. If you go to bigger shows, they generally won't allow horses who don't have documentation from the vet about the horse's vaccinations.
