  1. 4x-(x+7)=9

    put the - sign into the parentheses (am I spelling that right)

    4x-x-7=9

    add the x's together

    3x-7=9

    add 7 to both sides

    3x=16

    devide both sides by 3

    x=16/3

    which comes out to be 5 1/3
