  1. Look at Which Car archives on line f you can - they did a comparison a while ago.

Google car comparisons and see what ocmes up.

I have an X5.  Its brilliant on fuel, theres plenty of room, I get good insurance on it and its comfortable.  Its easy to load and unload too.  But a bit on the pricey side.

The Volvo 4x4 is meant to be very good too so look into that.

  2. 29 years of owning s/h range rovers just about sums it up. For 4 grand you can buy a 95/96 LPG Range Rover which gives you excellent economy, superb comfort, power, unrivalled off road agility. Why buy a tonka toy when these magnificent machines are available

  3. i run a LPG converted range rover, because i tow a trailer and the RR has a tow limit of 3.5 tonne on twin Axel trailer and 4 tonne on trailer with close coupled brakes, good off the road as well.it gives 20 to the gallon on petrol, and 20 to gallon on LPG (less than half the price of petrol  so equates to 40 mpg). choice of car depends on what you are doing with it. off road or towing id go for the range rover or land cruiser ( some fold recon they make a range rover look frugal ), if you want the safety of a 4 by 4 go for one of the car based ones, if you are looking to carry stuff, go by the load space. their is no perfect car - every one is looking for different things. think what you want from a car, see what fits that criteria, and of coarse nobody wants to drive something they don't like so your taste will also have bearing on what you buy

  4. I have a Mitsibishi L200

    best 4x4 in my opinion

great power and lovely to drive.

range rovers are for footballers and other rich folk

trust me get an L200 , good 1 with sat nav and all your gadgets for 15,000-20,000 if you look deep.

    Hope this helps.

  5. Range Rover, but also a good buy is the Hummer H3 or H2, but you seem to be looking luxury so. I would say the Range Rover or the Q7 their both really nice, the land cruiser is a waste of money and the X5 is just to look good on the road the 4x4 system stinks on it.

If your going to buy the Range Rover buy it new, because the new ones are more reliable than the older ones, and their better built. This is by far the most capable, because they have their Terrain Response System which is a dial on the center and you turn a dial to what surface your on and it locks the differential, and does the ride height for you. This gets 14 City and 18 Highway

The Q7 i have very good reviews on especially the Diesel version. They are capable but not as much as a Range Rover. this gets 16 city and 20 highway

A good buy i believe is The Hummer H3, it is very capable and gets 18 MPG Avg. (i own one and thats what my dash says) but the Hummer H2 is more capable than the Range but this avg's 10 MPG

  6. It depends what it's for: Things like the Q7 & X5 are performance vehicles which happen to be 4 wheel drive, whether the 4x4 system is necessary on these is extremely unlimkely. The Range Rover is a luxury status symbol: I live in a rural area & in the Winter, anyone who comes pheasant shooting has a Range Rover - anything else just won't do.

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a luxury 4x4 that's designed for & capable of, tackling some real rough stuff, as is the Nissan Patrol. Next time you watch a news bulletin from a disaster area or war zone, check out the vehicles used by Unicef & co: All Nissan & Toyota 4x4s, as they are tough, reliable & capable.

The biggest problem with the others is that they are road biased - they come with big, fat road tyres and don't have the ground clearance if you actually want to have a play off road.

To be honest, none are practical as they're all a bit thirsty (although a petrol Range Rover will average less than 10mpg, a Nissan Patrol will probably average nearly 30mpg), unless you actually need such a vehicle.

    They are good fun though.

ps If you just want a high driving position, buy a van!

  7. You obviously are in the market for a luxury four wheel drive.

The Range Rover is a fantastic machine that is over-priced but very able both on and off road. This is the choice of the royal family as well as the more fortunate country bumpkins. It will go anywhere you want it to and give you a comfortable ride in the process, but running costs are like the Rangey is to buy; Over-priced and also the reliability is suspect at times with unsure electrics.

Toyota Land-Cruiser is very popular in Australia because it can deal with the harsh terrain there and is more reliable than almost any other four wheel drive. It is pretty good economy wise and will return decent miles to the gallon if driven carefully. It is very big inside with plenty of equipment and best of all it's about half the price of a Range Rover for similar comfort levels.

Nissan Patrol is a great go anywhere vehicle but it lacks the luxury side of things and can be thirsty as the smaller engines have to be pushed hard to perform and the bigger engines are over powered and burn a bit of fuel for fun. Great price for capabilities but more on a par with Land Rover Defender.

Hummer H2/H3 are both ridiculous in the UK as they are over sized and look like Tonka toys that children play with and also Chris Eubank drives one which is enough to put most people off. Not to mention they only seat four including the driver and they are ridiculously thirsty that they should have their own Tax band.

Jeep Grand Cherokee is a great budget alternative to the Range Rover but again with the Jeep as the Range Rover is the reliability issue. The Jeep is luxurious with great equipment levels and can go almost everywhere. It is a thirsty vehicle though and along with the running costs and repair costs can be enough to tempt you to a Range Rover.

Audi Q7 is a fine machine and capable of going off road with a good four wheel drive system. The Quattro is well engineered and refined and the Q7 is filled with top spec levels which make this as tempting as a Range Rover but it is new on the market and has to build up a reputation like the Range Rover has to be a market leader. In all the Q7 is more reliable, more economical and sensible 'fashion' off roader (Just put off road tyres on first).

BMW X3/X5 are ridiculous and I will not make any further comment than these two are just a road car.

Porsche Cayenne is a good machine but it is a bit flash and not as robust off road. Again change the tyres and buy a petrol station to keep it filled with fuel especially the Turbo models.

Mercedes G Wagen - A fine off roader that is comfortable, Looks tough and performs well but almost twice the price of some of the above mentioned and they can be just as capable.

Volvo XC90 is a bit pointless and will stray off road as long as a road is still in sight. It is pretty good as a robust family car that will venture to nature reserves and off road parking but you won't venture too far into the forest. It is pretty reliable though and mediocre styling means it just blends in.

My choices are the Audi Q7, Range Rover 4.6HSE and Toyota Land-Cruiser. Good Luck and hope this helps.

  8. Toyota 4Runner

is the least expensive and practical, it's capable off road handles towing easily. The hwy ride is better than most truck based vehicles.

if you have deep pockets the Lexus GX

if your wanting the highest quality & luxury

    Lexus RX and Acura MDX

don't ever buy a Range Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Saab or Jeep.

too unreliable and expensive to fix.

the BMW X3 has a stiff ride, and is best on road.
