If the 4th G was deleted from this DNA strand, how would this affect protein synthesis and the resultant protein?

  1. This is an example of a frame shift mutation.

the normal mRNA strand would read as follows:

UAC GAU AGU AAC UGG AAC UCA AUA AUU

if the 4th G was deleted the new mRNA stand would read:

UAC GAU AGU AAC UGG AAC UAA UAA UU

    The original protein would be:

Ile Asp Ser Asn Trp Asn Ser Ile Ile

The frame shift mutation protein would be:

Ile Asp Ser Asn Trp Asn

The mutation caused G to be deleted. The next letter in the line up was T. This caused the mRNA strand to read "UAA" at this area which does not code for an amino acid; it is a stop codon.

THEREFORE THE PROTEIN WOULD BE INCOMPLETE AND NON-FUNCTIONING.

  2. it would synthesize a different protein, in other words, not the one that you need
