Question:

5.1 Sound converters?

A few months ago I bought a set of Logitech X-540 speakers and they work great, the only problem is I cannot achieve true 5.1 surround sound from them when connecting to my PS3. The problem is that the speakers only have 3 sound connectors (green, yellow and black) as an input and the PS3 only outputs 5.1 sound in HDMI or Optical. Is there a cheap solution that would allow me to convert either the PS3's HDMI or Optical 5.1 sound output into the three different colored cables?

  1. You need something like this: http://us.creative.com/products/product....

I don't know what you consider cheap, but this unit is the cheapest I know.

  2. Looking at the spec for your speakers, it would appear they're for computer gaming and are not suited for the PS3.

The PS3 is just the source for the sound, to get 5.1 decoded, you're going to need a proper AV receiver, some half-decent ones are currently available for less that £150.00, plus around £200+ for the speakers.

Have a look at the Yamaha AV61 system.
