Question:

5.1 speakers and LCD TV?

Hi, please could you help.

I have a 5.1 speaker set and a Wharfedale LCD TV/DVD combo.

I want to connect my speakers (which I originally used for my PC) to the new TV. I don't have a clue how to do it.

The only cable I got with the TV is an Audio cable (white and red). The external input ports on the TV are; COMPONENT input, PC input, S-VIDEO input, Audio input, Headphone output, SCART input, Antenna, HDMI input.

Nothing that I currently have allows me to connect the speakers up to the TV.

Please help,

thanks

  1. Could you specify what 5.1 speaker set you have - is it a whole system, and what inputs are available on the 5.1 system please? Then I'll try and help!

Ok, thanks for the further info. It looks to me that your surround system control unit / subwoofer will allow input from either a dolby digital source (presumably your PC connected to it by mini-jack?) or will allow stereo input, but not HDM input. If the stereo input is the standard red and white phono (RCA) then you can simply connect your supplied red and white leads to those, and to the TV's output red and white phono sockets. But of course you won't get Dolby surround sound that way.

Really your only sensible course of action is to either:

    A) Buy a new surround all-in-one system which either includes the DVD player, or has option for HDMI input from something such as a television or PS3 etc.

    B) Invest in a Home Cinema Receiver Amp with HDMI input, and a set of 5 speakers plus subwoofer. Can be as cheap or expensive as you want - more money equals better sound usually, and of course gets you better brands.

Whichever way you look at it I'm pretty sure your surround system was designed with PCs and their soundcards in mind and will most likely not allow connection of a TV/DVD combo.

  2. You cant hook that particular 5.1 system to your tv. You need a receiver with 5.1 sos.

  3. if the small four speakers connect to the subwoofer and the tv has audio outs, you might be ok. take the two cables you have and hook them into the audio output on your tv. then the other ends in the audio input on your sub. this should work.

if you dont have audio outs on the tv then you are out of luck without a receiver. you can get a decent reciever for about 150-200 dollars if your on a small budget.
