  1. Yeah! I`m in KY, and we felt a pretty good shake here! It wasn`t as large as the ones I felt when I lived in CA, but just the same a pretty good shaker for this area!!!

  2. 5,4R that's no an earthquake! that's peanuts! a good shaker is over 6,2R.

I do not even bother to wake up for a 5,4R....

  3. Is the POPE still in America? If he is still here he prevented it from being a 7.0!

  4. First - stay calm :-)

Make sure you're in a building that hasn't been damaged.  If you think there's a problem, GET OUT.

If you smell gas, TURN OF THE ELECTRICAL POWER, ***THEN*** TURN OFF THE GAS.

It's a good idea to get a large container of clean water, just in case of water main breaks.  Be sure you have a battery-powered flashlight and radio handy.  If there are other tremors, the safest place to be is under a sturdy piece of furniture that will keep you from being hit by falling debris.

You felt part of a magnitude 5.4 quake centered near Olney, Illinois.

Check out the USGS's web site:

Please help:  fill out the questionnaire about what you felt at your location:

  5. Any aftershocks to a 5.4 will normally fall in the 3.0-4.0 zone. This quake hit National news. It was plastered all over the TV news here in Calif. as well as the Internet. This quake location borders the much more seismically active New Madrid seismic zone known as the Ozark Dome Region. I believe the USGS officially is calling it a 5.2 which for Calif. standards is your basic moderate quake. The quake was fairly shallow around 7 miles deep which will give a good jolt anywhere near the epicenter. Ironically, at 5:12AM Calif. time/3:12AM Illinois time this morning people in San Francisco were commemorating the 102 year old San Francisco quake which destroyed most of the city. I was watching it on the news. We get 5.2 quakes fairly often. I've been in 2 quakes measuring 7.0 or greater and many quakes in the 5.0-6.0 zone. Some can be scary depending on your location. I hope for your case, this is not a precursor to a much larger quake. The USGS just announced last week that there is a 97.7% probability of a quake 6.7 or larger within the next 30 years right in my area. That sounds freaky!

  6. I'm in Effingham, Illinois, up north from Olney (epicenter) and wondering how they're faring down there, as well as in Flora, Louisville and other cities and towns. This was extremely widespread! There are people reporting from throughout Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan!

I am 57 and have experienced several quakes. This was the strongest and longest one ever! I filled out the form at that one site, noting that this event wasn't measured in seconds but in minutes.

It's been so long since I've experienced one that I was thinking of other reasons: windstorms/tornado, crash at the nearby airport, train derailment at the nearby tracks, or some sort of explosion. As I was walking from room to room, I suddenly realized what this was!

    Aftershocks?! *SHUDDERRRRRRR*
