  1. Bit of a broad question, but I'll try to answer.

First of all, are you referring to England on its own or the United Kingdom (UK) as a whole? The UK is a country made up of four countries, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. References to 'England', the dominant part of the UK (also called 'Britain'), often actually mean the whole of the UK. I'll answer as if you only meant 'England', but its notable to remember the distinction.

So, five events in 2007/08 in England:

    1. Tony Blair resigned as Prime Minister of the UK, and was replaced by Gordon Brown on 27 June 2007

    2. Smoking was banned in all pubs, restaurants and workplaces on 1 July 2007

    3. The bank 'Northern Rock' had a financial short-fall due to the sub-prime crisis in the USA and the subsequent 'credit crunch'. Its shares plummeted in September 2007 and there was a bank run in which savers withdrew over £1billion in one day. The bank was saved by large loans from the government, who took ownership of the bank in February 2008

    4. The Labour Party government lost heavily in elections to local government in May 2008, finishing third. The main victors were the opposition Conservative Party, whose candidate Boris Johnson also won election for London Mayor.

    5. Floods across England in the summer of 2007 resulted in around 10 deaths and £1 billion worth of damage. The worst hit areas were Yorkshire and Gloucestershire.

10 historical events (which I'll describe in less detail, for space reasons):

    1. In 1066, William the Conqueror invaded from Normandy (Northern France), defeating the Anglo-Saxon King of England, Harold II. This was the last invasion of England

    2. In 1707 the countries of England and Scotland were united into a new kingdom, the United Kingdom of Great Britain. They had shared the same king for around 100 years, but prior to that they had experienced centuries of war.

    3. On 5 November 1605, Guy Fawkes, along with a series of other Catholic mercenaries, attempted and failed to explode England's Houses of Parliament. The night is commemorated every 5 November on what is known as 'Bonfire Night'.

    4. The English Civil War, a continuation of the disputes between Catholics/Protestants, and King/Parliament, occurred 1642-1651. It resulted in the King losing and the 'interregnum' between 1649 and 1660 during which England was a republic with no king.

    5. From 1939-1945, England was subjected to a series of bombings and attacks by Germany and Italy during World War Two. 'The Blitz' was the sustained attacks in 1940-1941, when this was at its highest, killing 50 000 people.

    6. The 'Great Plauge' occured from 1665-1666, killing around 100,000 people, mainly in London.

    7. The Industrial Revolution was a period from 1780-1830 in which the UK underwent a number of industrial developments fundamentally changing the shape of British society, with large factories increasing British power and wealth. The Industrial Revolution spread out of the UK and across Europe and the USA to create the basis for modern societies.

    8. In 43 AD, the Roman Army completed their invasion of England and Wales, having previously been present ruling its South East from around 55 BC.

    9. In 1215, the Magna Carta was signed by King John. It was a document guaranteeing certain rights to noblemen that the King had to provide. It was influential in the development of English, and American, law and one of the first and very early stages in a move towards democracy

    10. In July 1966, England's national team won the football World Cup for the only time to date, when it was held in England. We beat the Germans 4-2 in the final and Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick (3 goals)!

Those summaries are necessarily brief. Hopefully that gives you a few ideas and things which you may want to learn more about!
