  1. Because this region is always growing and cell division is needed to support this growth. Also, while the root pushes through the soil, cells are scraped off (much like your skin cells) and must be replaced.


  2. There are three meristematic  (growth regions) in a plant;

    the root tip, the shoot tip and the cambium.

    Mitosis creates new cells for growth and repair, so mitosis occurs in these three regions of a plant only.
