5 days post root canal, extreme pain to the touch.

Hello, I had a root canal done 5 days ago, I'm drinking my antibiotics regularly. I don't even notice the tooth when I don't touch it, but sometimes I'm eating something solid, it slips out of my teeth and bam, I accidentally clash my teeth together.

I clashed them extremely hard yesterday eating a piece of sausage. My problem is, once I clash them once, it will hurt for a long time... It is an extreme pain, I've accidentally done it in my sleep and have lost sleep over it. I personally asked him for some type of pain killers, and he refused to give them to me.

Is it okay for a dentist to refuse to prescribe a painkiller? I don't usually complain, but it hurts extremely bad, and he's being a little unprofessional about it in my opinion. It took an hour just to be able to talk to him, all of my other friends that have had root canals, which is 3 of them, have been given pain killers.

Can I ice it? Can I do anything? Help please. Thank you.

  1. well ive gotten a root canal and it didnt hurt at all. All he did was prescribe me anit biotics but a pill.

It seems like he didnt do a good job, go to another dentist and have him look at it.

But the pain is different for everyone, i guess i just got lucky

  2. i've had a root canal done on me before and i personally had no medication prescribed to me. i just went through it which hurt like h**l. i would advise you to just eat soft foods for a few more days and to put a pack of ice on the side of your mouth for a few days too. :]

  3. Iam a dental assitant for a root canal specialist. I have heard and seen this happen in my office before. First my dentist would never refuse anyone pain killers after treatment of a tooth. I first suggest taking at least 800mg of ibuprofen and try not to bite on the tooth. Your tooth may be too high and need to be adjusted or perhaps it might be a flare up and you will need antibiotics. I strongly suggest the ibuprofen with a follow up with the dentist to check your bite. Typically root canals are just sore afterwards. I am sorry for your pain and I hope you feel better soon.
