  1. I did a 4:42 mile as a freshmen and I was doing about 35 to 40 miles a week. The workouts I did most were speed workouts like 800s, 600s, 300s, and stuff like that.

  2. You don't need that muh miles to run a 5 min mile, but instead a good combination of speed work, hill training, and mileage. I went from a 5:40 to 4:50 mile during a season of cross country in which I ran 35-45 miles a week. I have teammates that train the same and have run 4:30 miles as freshmen. Mileage is great for longer races, but excessive amounts will not automatically lower your mile times. Try 400 repeats with 30 sec rest at about 70-75 seconds per interval. Also 200 repeats at 30 sec rest at 28-32 sec intervals. If you can do these workouts you should be on the cusp of hitting a 5 min mile.

  3. You're running more than the average marathoner does at the peak of their training. I'd say it's probably overkill.

  4. i ran 5:06 as a freshman last year for the mile and i wasn't doing  any more than 40 miles a week... 55 miles is quite a lot.. just pay attention to your body, because overtraining can only hurt you
