  1. To relieve nasal congestion. Babies sneeze and blow out the nasal discharge, if their anterior nares are tickled by the tip of a handkerchief. Nose drops of 0.25 per cent ephedrine in saline relieve congestion. But nasal decongestants cause rebound congestion. These should not be used for more than a few days. Oral nasal decongestants such as pseudoephedrine hydrochloride along with antihistaminics may be tried. These are best avoided in the first six months of life. Antihistaminics dry up the thin secretions and relieve sneezing.

  2. Call your doctor. Vaporub is too harsh for such a young baby. Your not supposed to put that on them until 3 months. Make sure you keep the baby on an incline - that will help him breathe better.

  3. If you are breastfeeding, you can express a few drops of breastmilk into his nose.  WIll clear him right up.

If not, keep him elevated so that his head and chest are raised above his foot level.  (You can elevate a crib by putting some books/blankets under one end.  Just don't elevate it too high, it might fall).  Try a cool mist vapourizer as well, those will often do the trick.

Try the saline again too, sometimes it doesn't work the first time.

  4. This sounds strange but you should try to rub some vick vapour rub on his feet and put socks on.  My MIL swears that this will bring the cold from the head and it has worked on both of my children.

The only other thing I can think of is having a cold mist humidifer in the room where he sleeps.  That will help break it up and he should breath a little easier.  These remedies will only offer temporary relieve, really you just have to let things run their course.

Other than that you're doing a good job, keep up the good work!

    Good luck!

Oh and just so you know babies will only breath through their noses, even if it's congested they don't like to breath through their mouths, they are stubborn.  So, in some cases the congestion sounds a lot worse then it is.  BUT it's no fun to have a sick baby!

  5. Call the doctor, maybe there's something he can take, especially if it might interfere with his eating.
