Question:

5 year old finicky dresser. Help!?

My daughter is 5 and refuses to wear the majority of her clothes. She lives in a skirt and T-shirt. During the summer I don't mind this so much but when it's -40 below, a thin skirt is not going to cut it. I have tried taking her shopping to buy clothes and she tells me that she likes something but then hates it once it's home. I allow her to wear warm tights with her skirts but sometimes pants are a necessity. How do I handle this? I plan on putting away summer clothes very soon so that she doesn't have a lot of choice but this still doesn't solve the problem. How do I help her to accept a broad range of clothing and styles? Do I take her shopping with me or just buy stuff for her on my own. SUggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

  1. This too shall pass. She won't freeze. You can always get her a pair of snow pants to wear when she plays outside. Just don't make an issue of it. My daughter, a mom herself now, went about three months at age 3 refusing to wear anything that wasn't pink. She got over it. You have to pick your battles and this is one it's OK to let the child win. Save your strength for more important issues, like bedtime, homework and boys. The fun is just beginning.

  2. I don't know what size she is but try The Children's Pace. They have pink pants which she is still young so wearing those bright colors are okay for her. Since she really like shirts and you let her wear tights with them have her wear pants under her skirt. I know not very cute but then when she get some wear take the pants off of her. Another thing you can do is make her wear pants and tell her she will not get another skirt she starts to wear pants. It is just a phase it will end soon.

  3. Maybe if you see a little girl warmly dressed in pants say how nice she looks or arrange for your daughter to "overhear" someone else making a comment like that.

  4. If you let her make her chioce and she freezes, she will learn to make a better choice the next time.

You can also keep some warm clothes in the car so she can change when she gets cold.
