  1. I had LASIK on October 7, 2005. At my last eye exam, December 8, 2009, I was still 20/15. I was 20/1400 prior to getting LASIK. I have not experienced any unusual dryness or other complications. FULL DISCLOSURE: I work for an ophthalmologist who has performed over 73,000 laser vision correction surgeries. So I am not totally unbiased. However, I was a patient first, and I was turned down by the same surgeon a few years prior to getting surgery as the amount of correction needed and the relative thinness of my cornea had made me a non-candidate. I had also been turned down two other times for the same reasons by two other surgeons. Once my surgeon said yes to me I went and had two other consultations just to be on the safe side. One said yes and one said no, although the one who said no advised that she just didn't have the experience yet with the newer laser platform and may have changed to a yes later on. So I was still nervous and unsure of what I wanted to do. Meanwhile I had changed jobs and had gone to work for the ophthalmologist's office. While I had known several people who had LASIK surgery after I saw firsthand how it helped others I decided to have it myself. I had suffered a pretty bad eye injury when I was younger, and so I was as nervous as a kitten the day I had my surgery. But I have been so glad that I did! Yes, there are some people who have complications after surgery. While most of those are caused by inadequate screening, there will always be a small percentage of people who have problems that simply cannot be predicted. I recommend that you talk to friends and family who have had LASIK. Get some referrals from them and from your insurance. Most surgeons and clinics offer a free consultation. Check out the doctors' qualifications. Go to more than one. Most will be happy to answer your questions and will give you an honest opinion. Take your time. Think about it. Pray about it. And go with who you feel the most comfortable with. Good luck!
