  1. My mom just turned 50 and we had a small surprise gathering for her (7 couples). We went to a nice restaurant where her friends waited for her outside on a patio to surprise her. After she was surprised, we stayed out on the patio til sunset standing around and drinking cocktails and eating crabclaws.  After that, we moved inside to a large banquet table for dinner.  Lots of wine. Good wine. A must.  We had a long dinner of fun, talking, and drinking.  It was a great night where everyone-- Mom especially-- had a particularly good time.

In other words, there is no need to go way over the top with decorations, etc. (like I thought was necessary originally).  I learned that all it takes is close friends, the right atmosphere, good food, and plenty of drink to ensure that people have a good time.

So my recommendations for you would be to have a few decorations that really add a nice touch-- tiki torches, Chinese lanterns; fun alcohol like mojitos or mint juleps (or really good wine-- take advantage of that husband's pocket); maybe some of the honoree's fave music playing; and over-the-top food. And most importantly, make sure the right people are there. that is key. You need the close friends, but you also need the people who can keep a party going.

Have so much fun, good luck, and Happy Bday to your friend.

  2. How about a really swanky, outrageous costume ball?

  3. My best friend is turning 50 in September 2008. She said that she is going to be "Beyonce" at her birthday party.

  4. Diamonds are a girls best friend!!! Things need to be elegant, luxurious and rich.

-Quality food, satin tableclothes, huge 'diamonds' or crystals scattered as centerpieces. Get huge martini glasses with marbles in water. Light the marbles by getting 'Floral Lights' that are submersible.

-Floral arrangements that are very fragrant.

-Yes, definately a red carpet. Formal gowns and gloves. Tuxedos with tails and top hats.

    -Do it up!

-Favors-Bottles of Champagne with labels. Or those paper weights that are huge diamond rings. Where is this going to

be? If there is a pool...float flowers and candles. If you are inside-Get curtain rods and drape fabric like stage curtains!

Picture Clark Gable, Rita Hayworth and Old Hollywood. Brown Derby Cobb Salads, Filet Mignon and Mashed Potatoes with White and Green Asparagus, Vodka Ice Sculpture with Caviar.

Hey, he wants a bill...give him one!

  5. I worked a gala benefit dinner once where a lot of 50-somethings came.  It was themed The 1920's.  Women wore flapper dresses, feathers, boas, men wore zoot suits and fedoras.  White tableclothes, floating candles, white Christmas lights, good food, an emcee, tons of wine, it was incredible.  Everyone had the most fantastic time.

  6. Black and white. everything., including clothes.

  7. Movie Starlett Glam theme....you could decorate with movie memoribilla, have a red carpet etc and play games and have party favors that tie into old movies.  You could even ask guest to come dressed as their favorite old movie star.

Other ideas would be to take off on the year 1958 or have a This is your life type of deal.
