5000 volunteers to lend their hands for the upcoming Rugby World Cup in New Zealand
Rugby is a famous sport which has different leagues and alliances around the globe. The tri-nations tournament is one of the most prestigious alliances of rugby in the world where the top three countries complete the membership. It is governed under the auspices of the International Rugby Board (IRB) which is the governing and registration body of rugby across the globe.
However, the World Cup of Rugby is considered to be the third greatest event in the world which is going to be held in Northland, New Zealand in 2011. Around 20 countries are expected to participate in the six week event and the matches are going to start in the months of September and October in 2011.
It came as great news for the people in New Zealand when they heard about their country’s selection as a host for the 2011 RWC. As the people in the country are really fond of rugby, they couldn’t control their emotions and took to the streets to celebrate.
Alongside a source of entertainment, the game has a number of economic benefits for the host country as well.  People from across the world gather in the host country to attend such a big event. Fans from various countries such as South Africa, England and France to name a few require accommodation in local hotels and travelling facilities. Rugby fans are expected to pump a lot of money in the local economy.
However, if on one side, the event has the above mentioned benefits, but on the on other side, it has its own share of problems as well. It sometimes becomes impossible to control the traffic around stadiums and if the situation goes out of control, it may turn into a bane.
Therefore, to control or prevent such eventualities and incidents, the New Zealand Rugby Union (NRU) has started a volunteer program. Bredon Wards is the manager of this Volunteer Program and they are expected to conduct thirty eight road shows to train the people in the streets regarding the upcoming event. It will be part of an awareness campaign which will allow the people of New Zealand the opportunity to lend their services during this event as a volunteer in order to make turn it into a memorable event.
According to Bredon, people are very keen of lending their hands for the management of the event. The team for the volunteer program has 5000 vacancies and according to the NRU, ‘the response been very positive so far, people are taking much interest in the game, they are enthusiastically waiting for the events, and registering themselves for program in great number’. According to Mr. Wards, the road shows were a source of great information for the people as the common people were informed about the benefits and ways to help the NRU manage the event.
The upcoming World Cup in New Zealand has become a part of every discussion in New Zealand. Everyone is excited and anxiously waiting for this event to kick-off. The people in the country are hopeful that their team, which has been unbeatable for the last two decades, would manage to retain its dominance in international rugby.
